FISH ON FRIDAY IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY AT CATHEDRAL
The creation of fish shaped bunting was the order of the day at a workshop held on Friday 13th April at St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle.
The bunting-making workshop was held as part of a series of events to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Cathedral Events Manager Pam Walker MBE said: “There has been a lot of talk about making the longest piece of bunting in the world, but we thought we would be different and try to create a long piece of 'Fish' bunting."
Rather than the traditional triangles of material associated with bunting, the Cathedral challenged the participants to make their bunting as individual pieces of artwork in the form of a fish the significance of which, is as an ancient symbol of Christianity.
Pam said: "Each piece of bunting was a work of art in it's own right and that is what is different and unique about our bunting. The children and others taking part have created some simply fantastic pieces. The colours and the creativity displayed is amazing.
“We asked people to come along and help us create enough bunting to stretch round the inside of the Cathedral and the response was wonderful. We had visitors coming from across the city, through out the region and even a few from overseas. In total we created about 200 metres of bunting, enough to surround the naive and aisles of the Cathedral.
"We have been quoted as being in competition for the longest piece of bunting, but our aim was to encourage people to come into the Cathedral and get involved. We have achieved that and everyone involved had a fantastic time.
"The finished bunting will be used to decorate the Cathedral during our Flower Festival being held here around the extended national Jubilee weekend from 31st May - 3rd June and when the Cathedral takes part in the Newcastle/Gateshead 'EAT!' food festival this summer. Our involvement in this year’s EAT! Festival has a loaves and fishes theme, which is, of course, a strong Biblical theme. The Fish bunting created on a Friday, seems rather appropriate for that purpose. ”
